You Learn a Little More “The Second Loop Around”

A Caymanian Storytelling Experience by Bicycle

I returned to Grand Cayman this year after my first trip in March 2016. As a single female traveller visiting a friend who worked in Georgetown during the days, I decided to rent a a bicycle from The West Bay Loop.

Richard, the owner, had a convenient drop-off/pick-up location at the Westin across from where I stayed. After two days of biking up and down and exploring Seven Mile Beach on my own, I decided to join the scenic West Bay Loop tour to discover the local gems of true Caymanian culture in West Bay.

This year I ran into Richard at Macabuca (where the WBL begins) while snorkelling with some friends, and was excited to partake in the tour a second time. Last year I learned so much about the island’s rich history, as we were guided by a lovely Caymanian girl, Cryss, who took on on a journey through time, tying in her family’s personal history, including a stop at the graveyard where her ancestors rest.

Danny guided the tour this year- another proud Caymanian who remembers the island in the 1960s and can reminisce about the times before there was electricity available when he was a little boy! I noticed this year we took a slightly different path and stopped at new hidden gems which were not part of the tour last time. Richard loves to switch the tour up, as there are so many treasures to be discovered within West Bay.

The West Bay Loop is a wonderful chance to be exposed to the island’s extraordinary culture, even if you’re only here for the day. Richard was flexible with the cruise ship passengers who wanted to participate in “the loop” but leave an hour early to get some snorkelling in at Macabuca before heading back in time to meet their ship.

WBL is a great physical activity where you get to learn the island’s history from colonisation to pirate days, to the beginnings of its industrialisation, to its role in finance and how it is now one of the hottest vacation spots in the Caribbean!

Richard and his guides are very friendly and take extra precautions to ensure the safety of their passengers along the ride. Soak up the sun, pedal off the extra calories from your Margaritas and Mudslides, and join the West Bay Loop as you explore the beauty and history of the West Bay!
